The Five Faces of a Miracle
I met someone.
We met in the virtual world. It started with a few messages. Before I knew it, we had been talking for hours. Rare intelligence. Well-read, curious, confident. In many ways, she was my complete opposite. Maybe that's exactly why I couldn't get her out of my mind.
During those first few days, we argued as if we had known each other for twenty years. We cursed, got offended, fell silent, then started talking again. We met for coffee. As a joke, I asked her to pay this time. It wasn't about the money. I simply wanted to see whether she would go along with it. She understood the joke and paid without a second thought. I smiled. I walked her home, and then there was silence again.
Later came a phone call where we both went too far. Much farther than two strangers ever should. Harsh words were spoken, followed by long text messages. The kind of messages that usually mark the end of a relationship.
Then something unexpected happened. The messages disappeared. I still don't know whether it was a technical glitch or an act of grace from fate, but by the time we realized what had happened, there was nothing left to read. No proof of who had hurt the other more. All that remained were two people and one decision: to forgive. Not to analyze. Not to reopen old wounds. Not to keep score. Simply to move forward.
Since then, we've shared long conversations, sometimes lasting ten or even twenty hours. We've talked about movies, books, history, ships, witch trials, music, old loves, life, death, and everything else that suddenly becomes important when two curious people genuinely want to understand each other.
Today we met again, and that's when I saw her fifth face. Not the woman who argued with me. Not the hurt one. Not the sad one. Not the woman who always had another thought waiting to be shared. I saw a calm woman. She looked peaceful, responsible, and wise. Her eyes were full of life. She was wearing a summer dress. It wasn't flashy, yet somehow she made it look special. She was beautiful. She knows I like telling her that. And yes... she was adorable.
We had iced coffee at our usual place, talked for a long time, and somewhere during that conversation I realized something. If this story is meant to have another chapter, it has to unfold on its own. For now, I have to give her space. Because she truly lives. She travels. She learns. She explores. Sometimes she suffers, but she never stops living. She lives a rich, curious, and meaningful life.
And for the first time in a very long while, I found the courage to admit something to myself. Not that I have no chance, but that I, too, have to learn how to live again.
Maybe that's why it was so important that we met. Not because I needed answers to all my questions, but because she reminded me how important it is to have questions again.
