The Magic of Words

A friend recommended a Hungarian band to me.
One of their songs is built around four simple words: I'm sorry. Forgive me. Thank you. I love you.
As I listened, I found myself thinking that there really are words that are worth more than long speeches. They are so simple that even a small child can say them, yet many adults struggle with them for a lifetime.
To say I'm sorry is not a sign of weakness. It is the recognition that another person's feelings matter too.
To say forgive me is not defeat. It is the hope that a relationship is more important than being right.
Thank you is perhaps the most ordinary of all words. Yet it carries the awareness that not everything we have should be taken for granted.
And I love you may be the greatest act of courage. Once we say it, we cannot take it back. We give a part of ourselves to someone else.
As I reflected on these four words, a few more came to mind.
Please is the language of respect. It does not demand; it invites.
I understand may be one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person. It does not mean we agree on everything. It means we are willing to see the world through someone else's eyes.
Stay can sometimes say more than the most beautiful declaration. There are people whose presence cannot be replaced.
Goodbye reminds us that some farewells cannot be avoided. But they can still be accepted with dignity.
And then there is one more word.
I hope.
As long as we can still say those words, even our hardest days hold something that carries us forward.
Perhaps our lives are not shaped by great speeches after all, but by the simple words we have the courage to say at exactly the right moment.
