Edó and Judit, the Two Centers
Edó was playing more and more often with the DVTK senior team as a high post center. Back at Kilián, she and Mesi had been key players. Mesi controlled the baseline, Edó dominated around the top of the key.
The senior team was a different world. Here, her partner was Judit, known to everyone as Megyó, the team’s baseline center and a national team star. She was over six foot three, strong, and highly skilled. When she had an opinion, she said it. Direct, honest, sometimes brutal. That might have been why she and Edó connected so quickly. She did not take many young players under her wing, but she saw something in Edó. The same fire that drove her. When Megyó was on the court, the team’s chances immediately went up.
Edó respected her and liked her. She also feared her a little. Playing with Megyó left no room for mistakes. Over time, she understood that Megyó’s intensity was not personal. It was about winning. The pressure she put on everyone was for the team.
Before one of the games, Megyó stepped up to her and said her job that day was to neutralize Lenke. She would handle the rest. Kiss Lenke was one of the best centers in the league. Edó said she would take care of it, though inside she was far from confident. She would have been happy just slowing Lenke down a bit. She even joked that they could switch roles, she would take care of everything while Megyó handled Lenke. Megyó laughed and told her she could make those choices in ten years.
The game was played at home, in the City Sports Hall. The stands were packed. Drums, whistles, chants, everything you would expect. Even during warm-up, Edó kept searching for Lenke with her eyes. The moment she saw her, she knew it would be a tough game.
The game started hard. Edó focused only on her task, and somehow, it began to work. She made things difficult for Lenke on defense, and at the same time, she started scoring more and more points. At first, she did not understand why it felt easier than expected. Then she realized.
Megyó was constantly there for her. In every critical moment, she stepped in. Lenke and Megyó were on the same level, even teammates in the national team. Megyó took half the pressure off Edó and protected her from stepping into a losing battle. At the same time, she maintained the appearance that the responsibility was Edó’s.
That was their dynamic. As long as they played together, Megyó always protected her. Like an older sister.
