A Better Person?

A friend surprised me once again the other day with a remarkable song. Slowly but surely, they've become my personal music curator. It’s not the first time I’ve listened to a song only to realize hours later that what I had actually received wasn’t music at all, but a thought that kept unfolding within me.
The same thing happened this time.
There is one line that refuses to leave me:
"What you cannot let go of here is what will bury you."
For a long time, I thought those words were about other people.
Now I believe they are much more about ourselves.
Because it isn’t always another person we have to let go of. More often, it is the life we imagined beside them. The script of a shared future. The hope that one day everything would unfold exactly as we had envisioned.
It is a strange realization that some people do not enter our lives to stay forever. Sometimes they come to teach us something about ourselves. And once they have done that, the real question is no longer whether we can hold on to them, but whether we are able to move forward with gratitude.
There may come a moment in life when we realize that not everyone is meant to remain by our side. Some people we honor by preserving them in our memories exactly as they were at their very best.
That is not forgetting.
Nor is it defeat.
It is simply accepting that not every encounter is meant to become a lifelong journey.
The hardest goodbyes are not the ones where love disappears. They are the ones where love remains, but no longer has a purpose in our lives.
I believe this is where growing up truly begins.
Quietly giving thanks that someone once walked into our life in such a way that, afterward, the person looking back at us in the mirror was no longer the same.
Perhaps Heaven did not intend us for one another.
Perhaps it intended us to become better people through one another.
Maybe that is why the most important question is not who remains with us.
But whether, when we move on, we do so as better people than we were before we met.
